Currently, several types of drugs are used to treat cataracts in Turkey, but only surgery can provide a complete recovery. Medication can slow the progression of the disease, but lens clouding cannot be removed.

A complete restoration of vision without any problems is expected if there are no abnormalities in other parts of the eye (cornea, retina or optic nerves). The new lens is permanently implanted and does not require periodic replacement. The crystal lens plays a role in the level of clarity of vision. It decreases when looking at distant objects and expands when they approach. The clarity of vision after surgery varies depending on the function of the implanted artificial lens (IOL), as the instant perspective correction is lost after the natural lens is removed. In Turkish clinics, two types of lenses are used for implantation with their own characteristics: monofocal and multifocal.

Types of implantable lenses during cataract treatment in Turkey

Monofocal IOLs focus at a single distance. The vision is very clear after surgery, but it will not be crystal clear when reading newspapers and distant signs due to the presence of only one focus point. When focusing on near objects, far vision will become blurry, and when focusing on distant objects, it will be difficult to see what is near. The solution may be to use reading glasses.

Multifocal IOLs allow you to quickly focus your gaze at different distances (near and far), but not all at once. These lenses can improve the patient's quality of life by reducing the frequency of using reading glasses.

In Turkish clinics, cataract treatment is also carried out after LASIK corrective laser surgery. In general, refractive surgery to treat problems such as myopia, hyperopia, or astigmatism cannot affect the development or progression of cataracts. However, its effect may decrease after installing a new lens. Therefore, the decision on complex surgical treatment is made after a thorough diagnosis of the patient's eye problems.
